World’s largest wind tunnel opening in Raeford

img_6239.gif
I may not be sky diving as much for about the next month or so. Right now I’m taking a few weeks off and looking for a new AAD for my sky diving rig.

A new wind tunnel is being built in Raeford, NC by SkyVenture and is scheduled to open in August. It will be used by the military, but is also open to the public and experienced skydivers. It is also the world’s largest wind tunnel and will only be a three hour drive from my location. You know your jealous. We are planning on taking a group from the drop zone up to the wind tunnel. That is going to be an absolute blast.

The image on the left is a picture of two of the four turbines. The tunnel itself will 16 feet, 4 inches and provide 2,164 total horsepower for wind speeds in excess of 165 miles per hour. For most, the speed will be likely set to 120mph since those are normal free fall speeds.

Weekend

After experiencing a small main parachute malfunction the other week, I was in need of a reserve repack. The repack was ready this weekend, but my Cypres AAD is expiring next month and I need to buy one so I took the weekend off instead of jumping to save some cash.

The Cypress AAD expires after 12 years. The one I have came with the used rig that I purchased at the beginning of the year and only had about six months left. They are about $1200 brand new and you can find them used for about $100/per remaining year. I may have found one for $421 with 4 years left. It will also need an 8 year check which, if I remember correctly costs $160.

I sat at home and partied Saturday night. I don’t drink often. Two Bud Lites give me a buzz. Gary kept handing me another when I would finish and I think I ended up drinking about 8. Then I sat down later on and started to get sick and spent some time in the bathroom. If I’m the one getting the beer for myself I stop when I get wobbly. Seems that isn’t the case if someone keeps passing me beers when I’m already intoxicated.
